Configurable role profile

Provide neutral support, observation or independent assessment.

Gray Team is a deliberately configurable neutral role, defined by each organization's own doctrine. Depending on that definition it may cover observation, range and simulation support, evidence review or independent assessment. The pathway develops the discipline that neutrality requires: recording what was observed without shaping it, maintaining platform health without participating in the exercise, and declaring conflicts of interest before assessing.

Team-colour terminology varies by organization

CLIP maps each label to an approved, versioned role profile with explicit responsibilities, permissions, Rules of Engagement and assessment criteria. The colour itself never establishes authorization.

Mission intent

The role's purpose and its boundaries.

Supply a configurable neutral role — observation, support or independent assessment — based on organizational doctrine.

The mandate is defined per organization and recorded in the role profile
Neutrality requires separation of duties from the teams being assessed
Gray Team does not denote unauthorized or grey-hat activity

Core competencies

What this pathway develops.

Competencies are versioned and mapped to organizational, NICE, relevant SKKNI or custom frameworks without duplicating the underlying evidence.

Learning pathway

Progressive difficulty, evidence at every step.

  1. 01FoundationStructured learning and prerequisites.
  2. 02Guided labSupervised practice with checkpoints.
  3. 03Team labCoordination and handoffs within the role.
  4. 04Integrated exerciseMulti-team scenario under exercise control.
  5. 05AssessmentObserved performance and assessor adjudication.

In sequence: Foundation knowledge leads into a guided laboratory, then a team laboratory, then an integrated multi-team exercise, and finally an assessment that produces competency evidence.

Representative scenarios

How the pathway is exercised.

  • Observer cell

Recording observations across teams without influencing the exercise.

  • Infrastructure support

Maintaining range health without visibility into restricted exercise content.

  • Independent validation

Reviewing evidence and reproducing a score without prior involvement.

Tools and environments

Capability categories, not a tool list.

Specific tooling is selected per deployment after security, licence and air-gap review. The categories below describe what the pathway needs to work.

  • Observation and annotation surfaces
  • Platform operations and capacity views
  • Evidence review and score reproduction workspaces

Evidence of competence

What observable behaviour supports readiness.

A readiness claim for this role must trace back to these artifacts. Evidence freshness is tracked separately from current competence, so an expired record never silently counts as a current one.

How readiness is calculated
  • Observation record with time and source
  • Platform health and capacity evidence
  • Evidence review notes
  • Assessor rationale for each judgement
  • Declared conflicts of interest

Collaboration

Upstream and downstream handoffs.

No role operates alone. These are the relationships that make this pathway useful to the wider mission.

  • Supports White Team without assuming control authority

  • Provides independent input to assessment and after-action review

  • Maintains separation from the teams being observed

Metrics

Operational and learning measures.

What the platform can measure for this role. Targets are baselined with each organization rather than claimed in advance.

  • Evidence review completeness
  • Score reproduction success
  • Platform availability during exercise windows
